LOCAL HISTORY DAY
Led by teachers. Built for schools. Open to everyone.
We’re excited to launch the very first Local History Day—a bold new initiative developed by teachers, for teachers, as part of our national pilot year. Taking place in April 2026, this dynamic celebration will bring schools, heritage sites, and communities together to shine a light on the stories that matter most—those close to home.
Local History Day is about more than just one-off events. It’s a chance to build long-term connections between schools and heritage organisations, to inspire young people with place-based learning, and to raise the profile of local history in classrooms across the UK.
This is a grassroots celebration—shaped by real educators, tested in real classrooms, and designed to grow with the Local History Hub network. As we pilot the event in partnership with teachers, your ideas and input will help define what it becomes.
For schools, it’s a creative way to spark curiosity, enrich the curriculum, and connect students to the history on their doorstep.
For heritage organisations and historical sites, it’s a unique outreach opportunity—opening your doors to new audiences and helping you build meaningful partnerships with local schools.
Why It Matters
How To Get Involved
The best way to take part in Local History Day 2026 is through your nearest Local History Hub. Each Hub is led by local educators and supported by the wider Local History Hub network—creating space for schools, heritage sites, and community groups to plan, collaborate, and share ideas.
Find your local hub here to see what's happening near you.
Don’t have a Hub in your area yet? No problem. Local History Day is open to all schools and heritage organisations across the UK—whether you're part of a Hub or not.
We’ll provide guidance, inspiration, and flexible resources to help you take part in a way that works for your setting—whether that’s a classroom project, a community event, or a collaborative exhibition.
