OUR HOMES, OUR STORIES

Launching September 2026, Our Homes, Our Stories is a flagship project from Local History Hub — designed to help children explore where they live, who they are, and how their local history connects to wider narratives.

Developed with and by teachers, this project is a key component of our mission to make local history meaningful, inclusive, and accessible in every classroom. It places schools at the heart of their communities and helps pupils build pride in where they come from.

As we move beyond our pilot phase, Our Homes, Our Stories will become an invaluable, school-ready resource—enabling teachers across the UK to lead powerful local history learning in their own setting.

Why It Matters

Place-based history isn't just enriching—it’s essential.
Local stories help pupils understand their identity, connect with the wider world, and develop a deeper appreciation of diverse histories.

This project supports the development of cultural capital by helping children see value in their own surroundings, explore local buildings, people, and events, and recognise the importance of everyday heritage.

What To Expect

Launching in September 2026, the full programme will offer:

  • Three carefully sequenced lessons per year group (Reception to Year 6)

  • Age-appropriate resources co-designed by classroom teachers

  • Opportunities to explore local buildings, people, maps, and stories

  • A Year 6 portfolio project that brings together personal and local history

  • Printable certificates and optional celebration events

Designed By Teachers, For Teachers

Our Homes, Our Stories is being created in collaboration with working educators who understand the pressures of school life. Everything we produce will be practical, flexible, and aligned with curriculum goals so that any teacher can use it confidently in their own classroom.

This programme is more than a teaching resource. It's a national invitation for children to explore who they are, where they live, and why their stories matter. And it’s just one of the many ways Local History Hub is helping schools lead the way in heritage education.
