WELCOME TO LOCAL HISTORY HUB

At Local History Hub, we believe local history belongs in every classroom.

We’re a new, teacher-led initiative with a big ambition: to change how local history is taught and celebrated in primary schools across the United Kingdom.

History isn’t just about dates and facts—it’s about people, places, and the stories that shape our communities. That’s why we’re building a national network of Local History Hubs, led by passionate educators and rooted in real connections between schools, heritage sites, and local communities.

What We Do

Local History Hub is an early-stage, grassroots initiative with big ambitions. We’re currently piloting a growing network of teacher-led Hubs across the UK, supporting educators to lead the way in making local history more engaging, accessible, and meaningful. Through these Hubs, we:

  • Support Schools & Educators

We provide practical, curriculum-linked support to help teachers bring local history into the classroom. This includes ready-to-use resources, hands-on training, and school-based projects like Our Homes, Our Stories.

  • Connect Communities & Heritage

We help schools build partnerships with local museums, archives, and heritage groups — ensuring that local stories are preserved and passed on to the next generation.

  • Host Inspiring Events

From Local History Day to collaborative projects and workshops, we create opportunities for schools and communities to come together to explore the past in new and exciting ways.

  • Share Resources & Best Practice

We’re developing a national library of shared resources—from lesson plans and case studies to community project ideas—co-created by teachers and heritage partners across the UK.

Our Pilot Programme

In the 2025–2026 academic year, we’re launching a pilot scheme across five areas within local education authorities around the United Kingdom. Each area will host a teacher-led Local History Hub, rooted in local schools and supported by tailored resources, community partnerships, and practical training.

Use the interactive map below to explore our pilot Hubs, find out what’s happening in each area, and see how we’re working with local communities.

Our first two pilot Hubs are now up and running in Cardiff and Blackburn with Darwen. We currently have capacity for three more Hubs to join the programme this year. If you’re based in a school, local authority, or heritage organisation and would like to explore setting up a Hub in your area, we’d love to hear from you. [Find out more]

These pilots will help shape our national strategy—testing how Local History Hubs can grow sustainably, respond to local needs, and connect educators with the stories and heritage of their communities. The focus is on what works for teachers and pupils in real classrooms, across diverse settings.
